Fable 5 is free for 10 more days — Copilot just billed someone 50x

Hey, Two things happened this week that capture exactly where AI coding is in mid-2026: Anthropic quietly made its most powerful model ever free for two weeks, while GitHub hit power users with bills 10–50x higher than they expected. The era of flat-rate AI coding is dead. The question is just who’s making you feel it. --- ## This Week in AI Coding **1. Fable 5 is live — and free until June 22** Anthropic shipped Claude Fable 5 on June 9, the first publicly available Mythos-class model. SWE-Bench Pro score: 80.3% (Opus 4.8 is 69.2%, GPT-5.5 is 58.6%). It’s selectable in Claude Code right now, free for all Pro/Max/Team/Enterprise users through June 22. After that: $10/$50 per million input/output tokens. The benchmark gap vs. everything else is the widest it’s been since GPT-4 launched. If you haven’t swapped it in yet, do it this week. **2. Copilot’s billing shock is real — and getting louder** GitHub’s usage-based AI Credits billing went live June 1. Power users running agentic Copilot sessions are seeing bills jump 10–50x vs. the old flat-rate pricing. GitHub added temporary promo credits ($30/mo Business, $70/mo Enterprise) through August to quiet the noise. The structural reality: agentic AI coding is now priced like GPU compute, not like a SaaS subscription. Plan accordingly. **3. All the coding tools now use the same blueprint** Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and Google’s Antigravity have converged on an identical architecture: terminal-native CLI, parallel subagents, isolated Git worktrees. The feature race is over. The differentiator now is model quality, price, and developer habit. That’s good news for Claude Code — it just got the best model — and bad news for anything trying to compete on features alone. **4. Microsoft and Google are building their own coding models** Microsoft unveiled MAI-Code-1-Flash (its first in-house text-to-code model) at Build 2026, and Google confirmed Gemini 3.5 Pro for June. The play: reduce dependency on Anthropic/OpenAI with proprietary models that run cheaper and live inside their own platforms. Expect Copilot to lean on MAI-Code for the “affordable tier” while Claude stays at the top. **5. Vibe coding is now officially a mainstream discipline — and that changes the angle** 63% of people who describe themselves as vibe coders are non-developers. Gartner projects 40% of new enterprise production software will involve vibe-coding techniques by 2028. But the 2026 story is discipline — auth, payments, and encryption are consistently the spots where AI-generated code breaks in prod. The meme is over. The governance conversation has started. **6. AI skills are table-stakes in job listings — and junior hiring is collapsing** 42% of software job postings now mention AI skills, up from 8% in 2022. Developers with AI tooling + system design land roles 2.3x faster. But junior hiring is down 28% from its 2022 peak, and new grads are just 7% of Big Tech hires vs. 32% in 2019. The bottom rung of the career ladder is structurally shrinking. Worth knowing if you’re advising anyone thinking about starting to code. --- ## What We Shipped **@endofcoding YouTube pipeline**: EP115–EP120 scripts are generated and queued — topics include the 30-day Claude Code vs Cursor experiment, running Claude Code overnight on a production repo, and the shift from vibe coding to agentic engineering. Uploads are blocked by the recurring YouTube OAuth token issue (manual sign-in required). Videos are ready, they’re just waiting on the pipeline to unblock. Also this week: updated all YouTube video descriptions to lead with [vibe-coding.academy](https://vibe-coding.academy), and patched the GitHub → Vercel webhook for vibecodingebook.com that had been silently broken since early June. --- ## Tool of the Week: Claude Fable 5 in Claude Code **What it is:** Anthropic’s new flagship — the first Mythos-class model available to the public. SWE-Bench Pro score of 80.3% is the widest benchmark lead any coding model has had in this category. **How to use it now:** If you’re on Claude Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise, it’s free through June 22. In Claude Code, select Fable 5 from the model picker. After June 22: $10/$50 per million input/output tokens via the API. **The honest read:** The gap vs Opus 4.8 is noticeable on complex multi-file refactors — fewer wrong turns, better context across large diffs, less boilerplate in generated code. For a two-week free window, it’s the most straightforward upgrade available right now. Use it before the billing clock starts. --- ## Quick Links - [Best AI Coding Tools — Updated Post-Fable 5](https://www.developersdigest.tech/blog/best-ai-coding-tools-june-2026-post-fable5) — solid current-state map across all major tools - [State of Vibe Coding 2026](https://hashnode.com/blog/state-of-vibe-coding-2026) — the data behind the mainstream crossover - [AI Coding Agents Comparison June 2026](https://lushbinary.com/blog/ai-coding-agents-comparison-cursor-windsurf-claude-copilot-kiro-2026/) — Claude Code, Antigravity, Cursor, Kiro, Copilot side by side - [Copilot Billing Shock: what power users are actually seeing](https://www.techtimes.com/articles/317536/20260601/github-copilot-pricing-change-drives-backlash-agentic-bills-jump-10x-50x-power-users.htm) --- That’s the week.
