The US government just banned a frontier AI model (and Anthropic is fighting it)

Hey, Quiet week in AI? Nope. The US government pulled Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 from the market. Windsurf rebranded overnight. GitHub launched a $100/month plan. And the open-source coding agent movement just hit 7.5M developers. Full debrief below. --- ## This Week in AI Coding **🚨 First-ever AI model export ban — Fable 5 and Mythos 5 pulled (June 12)** A US government export-control directive forced Anthropic to disable both Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all users worldwide on June 12. The trigger: a reported jailbreak technique cited as a national security concern. Anthropic complied — then pushed back publicly, saying if this standard were applied consistently it would “essentially halt all new model deployments for all frontier model providers.” First time in history a government has used export controls to pull a specific frontier AI model. Fable 5 launched June 9. It lasted 3 days. **🔄 Windsurf is dead. Devin Desktop is born. (June 2)** Cognition retired the Windsurf brand entirely and relaunched the IDE as Devin Desktop. The Agent Command Center is now the default surface, with the open Agent Client Protocol (ACP) adopted. If you used Windsurf before, workflows carry over — but the product identity is completely different. Worth flagging since a lot of vibe coders built their stack around Windsurf. **💰 GitHub Copilot Max: $100/month for heavy users** GitHub introduced Copilot Max — a new individual tier at $100/mo with 20,000 AI Credits (roughly $200 of computed usage). For developers running sustained agentic workloads who kept hitting the soft cap on Pro. If you've been in heavy agentic mode, check whether the math works out vs. pay-as-you-go flex billing that went live June 1. **🌳 Gemini CLI sunset June 18** Google sunsetted the Gemini CLI on June 18. The replacement is Antigravity CLI — rebuilt in Go, async workflows, unified architecture. If you have scripts, CI pipelines, or local workflows calling , they need updating. **👷 AI job market check-in (PwC 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer)** The bifurcation is accelerating: - AI job postings up 134% YoY; overall tech still 34% below pre-pandemic levels - Workers with advanced AI skills earn 56% more than peers in the same roles - Junior hiring at Big Tech: 7% of new hires vs. 32% in 2019 - AI/ML engineer postings up 85% YoY Real AI engineering skills = strong demand + wage premium. Junior without AI skills = the gap is widening every quarter. **🔧 Microsoft MAI-Code-1-Flash: now shipping** The model Microsoft announced at Build is now in customers' hands. Takes natural language descriptions and outputs full application code. Microsoft positioned it explicitly to “lessen reliance on OpenAI.” Interesting move for a company that already runs GitHub Copilot. --- ## What We Shipped **VeriduxLabs this week:** - **LLMHire** — build fix shipped June 18, stable again - **Vibe Coding Academy** — now the #1 organic traffic source across the entire portfolio - **SPARit** — Google Ads campaign in setup, first paid traffic test for the VC evaluation tool - **YouTube pipeline** — 130 episodes uploaded and live, backlog fully cleared - Content live across CyberOS, Kynvo, and VCA --- ## Tool of the Week: OpenCode The model-agnostic coding agent that just hit 160K GitHub stars and 7.5M monthly active developers. MIT licensed, terminal-native, works with 75+ AI providers (Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, local via Ollama). The feature most people miss: **LSP integration**. OpenCode feeds compiler diagnostics directly to the model — real type info, import paths, and live compiler errors — so it understands *why* your TypeScript is broken, not just that it is. If you're paying for a single-vendor coding tool and don't need the full IDE experience, this is worth a serious look. → [opencode.ai](https://opencode.ai) / [GitHub](https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode) --- ## Quick Links - [Anthropic's statement on the Fable 5 + Mythos 5 suspension](https://www.anthropic.com/news/fable-mythos-access) - [LogRocket: AI dev tool power rankings June 2026](https://blog.logrocket.com/ai-dev-tool-power-rankings/) - [PwC 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer](https://www.pwc.com/gx/en/services/ai/ai-jobs-barometer.html) - [OpenCode on GitHub](https://github.com/anomalyco/opencode) --- Building with AI or navigating the AI job market?
