Pick one niche and one offer

The fastest way to lose three months is to offer "AI automation for any business". Nobody buys a category. People buy a fix for one specific, annoying problem they can measure.

Start from what you already know

Upwork's figures for 2025 (published Feb 2026) show which AI skills grew fastest: AI integration +178% and chatbot development +71% (SelfEmployed summary). Those are growth rates, not earnings, and some start from a small base. The pattern is what matters: work that connects AI to a process a business already runs.

Your edge is your domain. If you've worked in bookkeeping, a clinic, real estate, logistics or a school, you already know where the hours leak.

The one-process test

Pick a process that:

1. happens often, daily or weekly;
2. has a clear input and output: an email arrives, a reply goes out;
3. can be measured before and after: minutes per item, response time, items missed;
4. tolerates a human approval step before anything irreversible.

Good first candidates: sorting leads from a contact form, filing supplier invoices, drafting first replies to booking requests, summarising a weekly spreadsheet.

Poor first offers: "an AI employee", anything that moves money, and medical or legal decisions without a professional in the loop.

Write the offer in one sentence

I help [who] cut [process] from [before] to [after], with a person approving every [risky action].

If you can't fill in the before number, measure it first: time yourself, or ask someone who does the job. A guess here becomes a broken promise later.
